Andrei Molodkin’s “Government Down” consist of 10 gigantic steel letters painted in black. The half standing sculpture is surrounded by massive concrete walls, highlighting how scary a word can turn into a symbol, or even an icon, and make you think and feel uncomfortable standing in front of it.
The falling symbol transcript today’s struggle the Old World is facing. Molodkin the raises important questions regarding the role of the State Structure in our contemporary Western culture.
In is body of work, Molodkin e explores the clash between culture, religion, economy and politics when he uses recognizable religious images or cultural iconography as his subject matter. Molodkin believes that the oil industry is the flesh and blood of Western economy and he comments on how a national resource can become a national identity.
All the sculpture is free standing thanks to a deep engineering and an industrial production using aviation technologies like laser cutting and welding.
